Placemaking

From "Envision Norwich! Submit An Idea"

Go to the project

Where? Citywide

What? Neighborhood signage/placemaking

When? Next 3-5 years

Who? City/NCDC

How? Purchasing signs, hiring artists for murals

Why? Norwich has so many villages with their own unique sense of place. It would be great to have murals or signs or gateway features leading into each of the different parts of town to create a sense of place. For example, the concrete wall/stairs at the bottom of Laurel Hill would be a great place to have a large mural to let people know they're entering Laurel Hill.

Hi Nicole, I agree with the idea of placemaking, I think this is incredibly important for a city to have places that are centered on people and their needs, aspirations, desires, and visions. I would love to know your thoughts or ideas on the new (yet-to-be-named) pocket park at 63 Broadway, does it create a sense of place in the community? https://envisionnorwich360.com/en/projects/new-downtown-pocket-park

@Lucas Kaiser I think between the parklet/seating outside of Billy Wilson's, this new pocket park and the courtyard next to Castle, the City has done a great job creating a sense of place on lower Broadway! I'd love to see similar projects outside of downtown in the coming years.

Physical signs are certainly worth developing and exploring but perhaps in parallel with that initiative deeply IT and computer arts students at both NFA/NT as well as Three Rivers collaborating with the local chamber of commerce leadership in partnership with Field Trip and Google Now (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_Trip_(application) for placemaking that shows up on cell phones. The tech tools are there and the pathway developed; what's lacking is local content (and providers).
