West Main Street Traffic issues

From "Post your proposal here and place it on the agenda of Norwich Community Development Corporation"

Go to the project

The State of CT wants to install a multitude of roundabouts to help minimize accidents and provide better traffic flow on West Main St. 40 years ago this would have been a brilliant idea - but today it would shut down every business on this street and have a major impact on businesses on the west side of New London Tpke also.

Here are two ideas that might help reduce the crazy driving that takes place:

1) Install several low profile speed bumps - relatively inexpensive and they work

2) have a minimum of 2 locations (changed on a daily basis) on W Main St where either the State Police or the Norwich City police park and be on the lookout for people who are speeding, changing lanes dangerously. Police presence alone will cause folks to slow down and take it easy and you could do this for 100 years and still save money over having roundabouts.

Agreed that the roundabouts are a bit of overkill. I wonder about a road diet as a solution, along with protected bike lanes using the extra space. No one to pass and no left turns = no reason to speed or shift lanes. A pilot of this could also be done with two lines of Jersey barriers. Measure how much bike traffic we get to the businesses on 82, and see if it increases. This route is barely accessible to cyclists as it is currently.

In addition to your first suggestion, I'd like to see Jersey barriers the length of Rte 82 assuring NO left turns against traffic and regrading of all entrances and exits to make them less steep as I've seen far too many hear collisions as a trailing car almost backends the vehicle in front that must come practically to a stop to enter a business's parking area (I was told the original heights were suggested by DOT at the time). And placing traffic cameras at all lights to, if nothing else, create the threat of speeding enforcement might be worth exploring.
