Small movie theater that shows older movies (cult classics) & independent films

Aaron Maxwell•4 years ago We already have the big theaters in Lisbon and Waterford, but to find a small theater showing independent, artsy, or cult classic films, you need to drive all the way to Mystic or Niantic. One of my favorite theaters of all time is the Avon theater in Stamford, particularly for their Thursday night cult classics series, which I think they stopped doing recently 😢, but they DO still show old movies. They are are having a screening of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) for free! (Not saying this has to be free, but their system is working well enough to afford them a free screening like this). In the Avon theater, on a big screen, I've seen movies like Alien, Rocky Horror Picture Show, the first Star Trek Movie. There are so many movies I can think of that would be super exciting to watch again on a big screen, like Goonies, A Christmas Story, Monty Python's Holy Grail. Downtown would be the ideal location, of course, so people would be encouraged to go out afterwards (or before) to visit one of the restaurants/bars. I am not aware of what building space exists to put this into, but I'm imagining there must be something with a room big enough to accommodate? Bonus points if it caters to teens in town with nothing to do. When I grew up in Old Saybrook, we'd go see movies all the time in the theater there. It's literally the only thing I can think of that the town had to offer for us kids. There was a youth center at one point that none of us would be caught dead in 😆. Mostly we rode bikes, played around in Toys R Us [RIP] and ate fast food, but a movie was a great way to go out as a group of friends. Earlier matinees would be essential, making sure there are movies that will actually interest teens. Some other unique features would be for them to serve alcohol to adults (like they do in Mystic), or if not, maybe coffee and more interesting treats than just giant soda and candy. Definitely popcorn, though. And reclining chairs like in Mystic are really nice, with nice cup holders and mini tables, but we'd just need to be mindful of the available space and make sure it can have enough seats to meet the demand. I imagine if you show movies that people will want to see, you'll pull folks into downtown from outside Norwich who would otherwise travel to the other local theaters.

Lights and Emergency Boxes

Aaron Maxwell•2 years ago The walking path along the Yantic River from the Falls Mill Condos to where it connects with Tyler Ave is a lovely walk, but it is too dark at night, and a bit too secluded to feel 100% safe walking alone back there. Some things that could make it feel a little safer would be lights, a couple blue emergency phones and some CCTV cameras.I think the same could be said about the shoreline pass section as you leave Howard T Brown going underneath the West Main st bridges and along the Yantic River, especially as that area gets developed and the Heritage trail becomes more frequented.
