TACTICAL URBANISM BROAD SUMMARY:
Incremental Change: Emphasis on the importance of small, temporary changes in urban spaces to test ideas and gather community feedback before committing to larger, permanent changes.
Community Engagement: Tactical Urbanism encourages active participation and collaboration among community members, local governments, and organizations to address urban issues. It promotes bottom-up initiatives driven by local knowledge and needs.
Low-Cost Interventions: It focuses on affordable, adaptable, and quick interventions using materials like paint, planters, benches, or pop-up installations to transform spaces temporarily, demonstrating potential improvements.
Adaptive Approach: Tactical Urbanism advocates for adaptability and flexibility in urban planning. It encourages adjusting plans based on real-time feedback, allowing for responsive and dynamic urban development.
Policy and Regulatory Changes: Policy changes to support these temporary interventions and potentially incorporate successful tactics into long-term urban planning strategies.
Demonstration Projects: Creating temporary
installations or events as demonstrations allows communities and authorities to visualize the potential of a space, paving the way for more substantial long-term changes.
Safety and Accessibility: Tactical Urbanism prioritizes creating safer, more accessible, and people-friendly environments in cities by focusing on pedestrian and cyclist-friendly interventions.
Measurable Impact: It emphasizes the need to measure the impact of these interventions, whether through community feedback, data collection, or observation, to assess effectiveness and inform future decision-making.
The test design will be located in proximity to Otis Library. Colorful book spines will be painted in the cross walks and painted pages of books will create a pathway down the sidewalk to the library and newly installed parklet.
Enjoy a book outside in the parklet, meet a friend for a discussion, or just relax outdoors.
An extra feature of this Tactical Urbanism installation is the redirection of one-way traffic on Cliff Street to eliminate the strange curve at the stop sign.
- Improved pedestrian access and safety
- Visual enhancements
- Highlighting a valuable community asset
- Providing additional outdoor space in downtown
